To help you plan your Looking for Lincoln adventure, we're asking you to picture Springfield as the center of your travel compass. So if you are planning a trip to Springfield or just traveling through on your way to somewhere else, we will help you find interesting places to stop along the way.
East
If you are coming from the direction of Indiana on I-74 your first Looking for Lincoln stop should be DANVILLE where Lincoln often practiced law. The best place to start is the Vermilion County Museum complex which includes the Dr. Fithian Home and a brand new historical museum. From Danville it's an easy side trip to CHARLESTON by way of Rt. 150 where you can visit the Lincoln Douglas Debate Museum, the Lincoln Log Cabin and several other significant Lincoln sites. Or go straight from Danville on I-74 right into DECATUR.
North
Coming down I-55 from Chicago there are all kinds of great places to find Lincoln. Start in BLOOMINGTON with the David Davis Mansion and the McLean County Museum of History. Then go on to the LINCOLN Postville Court House or the Lincoln College Museum. From there MT. PULASKI is only 20 miles from there on Route 10. Or stay on I-55 until the exit for ATHENS and PETERSBURG.

If you are on I-74 stop in GALESBURG and see the Carl Sandburg home and visit Knox College home of a Lincoln Douglas Debate. Then as you travel further on I-74, METAMORA is a short drive from Peoria.
South
VANDALIA is an easy drive from St. Louis on I-70. Stop first and see the Vandalia Statehouse where Lincoln served as a first-time legislator. Stay on I-70 and CHARLESTON is an easy one hour and 20 minutes away. Or if your goal is Springfield take Route 51 and 29 through TAYLORVILLE and visit the Christian County Historical Museum and see an original wood courthouse that was part of the 8th Circuit.
West
If you're driving to Springfield from the west on I-72, PITTSFIELD is about 10 minutes from I-72. BEARDSTOWN is about 40 minutes west of Springfield on Route 125
