Lincoln’s connection to Galesburg is an important one. Old Main at Knox College, the site of the 5th Lincoln Douglas Debate, is the only original debate site still standing. Large bronze tablets flank the east door, commemorating the debate. Poet Carl Sandburg was born in Galesburg and his birthplace is open to the public. Sandburg is associated with Lincoln because he is possibly the most famous of Lincoln scholars. His early years in Galesburg helped to shape his literary talents and his life-long interest in Lincoln.
Historically Galesburg was a railroad town and the folks there are so proud of their railroading history, they created the Galesburg Railroad Museum. Visitors can tour a 1923 Pullman parlor car and a restored passenger engine, see a completely outfitted Railway Mail Service car and even a little red caboose. Adjacent to the Railroad Museum is the Discovery Depot Children’s Museum full of interactive exhibits, programs and educational experiences. Hungry or want to shop a little? Within a two block walk is the Seminary Street Historic Commercial District which includes restaurants, unique shops and a huge antique mall. This area was one of the first Main Street developments in the country.
