Lincoln Herndon Law Office State Historic Site Lincoln moved his law practice to several buildings during his career in Springfield. This is the only building that is still standing. Lincoln moved into the building in 1843 and William Herndon became his partner in 1844. They practiced here until 1852 when they moved to another building which no longer exists. A second story window looks directly across the square at the Old State Capitol. The building also contains the only Federal Court in Illinois between 1840 and 1848. Rooms filled with clutter and an odd assortment of makeshift furniture, vividly recreate what professional life was like at a time when Lincoln was regarded as a very successful attorney.
